Manchester Life Development Company, is a joint venture between Manchester City Council and Manchester City Football Club owner Abu Dhabi United Group. The company was formed to drive forward the development of the Ancoats and New Islington neighbourhoods. Manchester Life appointed Eric Wright to deliver the conversion of the grade II-listed New Little Mill in Ancoats regeneration area into 68 apartments, with Northbank Demolition carrying out the Strip Out package.
The existing façade of the building needed to be retained so as to protect its historical importance. The demolition works comprised of the internal strip out of all loose fittings, localised asbestos removal, removal of lead paint from walls and the removal of the roof and all floors below in their entirety so as to retain the external envelope and leave a clear area within the building in which the new dwellings are constructed. An archaeological inspection was undertaken at commencement and upon uncovering of tunnels within the basement area. Northbank were responsible for on site liaison with the Archaeological Officer, ensuring that areas of interest were clearly segregated and excluded from disturbance by the demolition works
